Stolen cremation ashes and grave robbing
With the worldwide economy being in a shambles, thieves have taken to stealing anything they can sell. The latest items are cremation urns. A man moving back to St. John's from Ontario discovered that an urn containing his father's ashes had been stolen from his car overnight. So they are even breaking into cars and taking the urns. Be careful when you transport your ashes and never put your ashes in checked baggage if you are flying.
Cemeteries are having trouble with grave robbers taking cremation urns. These cemeteries are offering rewards to get the ashes returned. More than one theft of human remains has been reported by the Lebanon International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery. It seems that thieves are breaking into the cemetery for the value of the urn. These thieves are prying open the columbarium and making off with urns. If you are going to have your ashes interred in a cemetery, it is best to pick a bio degradable urn and bury it.
I recommend that you pick a wonderful place that you enjoyed to have your ashes spread instead of keeping them in a urn that might be stolen. There are some beautiful places in the US National Forests, along some national hiking trails in the US, US National Parks, and even some BLM land. Go have a wonderful time in nature selecting a great place to spread your ashes. Don't let those thieves dump your ashes in the street and sell your urn.
