Group or Communal Cremation
The crematorium will place several animals together to be cremated at the same time. However, many services don't spread the ashes in a memorial park or other place of reverence. There are no hard and fast rules or regulations so you must inquire before you use that service.

Individual Cremation
If you decide to go the individual cremation route, you can get your ashes back. This way, you will know where they will be spread. You can also specify in the contract where they will spread the ashes after the pet is cremated but even that doesn't guarantee it. It is important that you pick a reputable cremation service that will fulfill your wishes. Don't assume anything because as we already know, most business is just in it to make money. They will pick the cheapest route to go.

Cremation hurting the traditional funeral business

How will the increase in cremation and scattering of ashes affect the burial industry? In the case of funeral homes and cemeteries, it will cause them to raise prices. Some areas are seeing cremations rates close to 75%. These are localized to certain counties but the trend shows what is going to happen to the traditional funeral business. If you are a pallbearer for hire, you might want to start looking for new job training.

With cemeteries, it makes the cost of plots go up because the employees have to be paid. Cemeteries are a business just like any other business and they need to make money. Each cemetery has a fund for perpetual care of the graves. If they don't get these funds, the graves get grown over and lost some where along the way. Cemeteries can be paved over and have during road construction if they aren't properly maintained for years. When they are allowed to revert back to their natural state, all record of their existence can be lost.

Funeral homes need to sell high profit caskets, flowers, and services to maintain their business. With less people using their service, each person who does decide on a traditional burial pays more. As with any service, the more it cost, the less people use it. The less people who use it makes it cost even higher until finally the service can no longer be offered because not enough people can afford it at that cost. Funeral homes in the are where you see high cremation rates are struggling.

In the end, burial we be a premium service even more expensive than it is today. The lack of money for an average family in today's economy will hasten the decline of the traditional burial. All things change and the burial in a cemetery of an embalmed body in a casket might soon be a thing of the past. No more horror movies where houses are haunted or night of the living dead.

Credit Crunch and Burial

The credit crunch is a problem for those looking to have a typical funeral or even a cremation done. A funeral home or crematorium is a business and they aren't a non profit organization. In the past, a funeral home would do a funeral for the low income person and wait to get reimbursed from the government. This was expecially true in the UK. In the UK. it could take up to 2 months for the government agency to pay the bill. In the meantime, the expenses of the funeral or cremation were funded by a business loan. The loan costs were part of the price.

Another way to fund a funeral or cremation would be to charge the amount on your credit card. Burial costs are often a shock to the surviving members of the family and funeral homes have been known to hard sell many extravagant items to the grieving families. It left them with a large bill but they could pay it out over time. If you have been following the news, you will see that credit card companies have been decreasing the limits on your cars as fast as they can. If you are someone that doesn't look at all details of your bill, you could be shocked at your limit today. With no room left to charge anything, there is no room for the unexpected funeral expenses.

Both of the above scenarios are a direct result of the world wide credit crunch. While this is affecting those that haven't planned in advance, sometimes planning in advance is a bad idea. It is a bad idea if you buy a burial insurance policy. Pre-need or pre-paid funeral plans are being raided by the companies. The company, like National Prearranged Services, is going out of business leaving people with no money for burial. The Neptune Society was caught not putting the required amount of the plan in escrow. As we discussed here before, buy a standard insurance policy and stay away from the burial plan ones.

Of course, you can save a lot of money by doing a green burial. In these days and times where money is scarce, don't bury your cash in a standard funeral. Take the low cost green burial way with a cremation and scattering your ashes.

Cremation Jewelry

We here at Pyrefyre suggest a spreading of your ashes but some people like to keep a small amount as a memorial to their loved one. If you do that you can pic from any number of different types of jewelry to wear. See the jewelry in the picture.

The body of my wife's mom was donated to research along with some of her organs. She is will be cremated and returned almost a year later. So, the girls were missing their mom because they could not go visit her any place. The solution is to have some of her ashes placed in a piece of jewelry for them to keep or wear if they like. The rest of her ashes will be spread at a cemetery. This is not a place I would pick, too many dead people just laying around there. It would be much better to select a place where she could join the life cycle and produce some wild flowers.




You have lots of choices for jewelry. They have photo jewelry where you can have your favorite photo along with some ashes. If you spread them at sea, there is a lovely seahorse as a remembrance. Here at Pyrefyre we talk about picking a great place to scatter your ashes after they have a wonderful celebration of your life. This allows you to go out in style instead of sitting on someone’s fireplace mantle. We have also discussed the practice of leaving a small amount of ashes in a vial to be worn by a loved one. Some have also chosen to reserve a small amount of ashes for use in memorial art but scatter the rest. However, there are risks to leaving any of your ashes behind in an urn or anywhere else. They have been thrown out, stolen, or worse. So it is a good idea to write down what you want to have done with your ashes and select someone you can trust.

Seems like an artist, Australian Natascha Stellmach, said that she plans on smoking his ashes. She claims they magically appeared one day so she could have this elaborate ritual with them. She has termed what she is doing art. Just how she actually came to have his ashes is a strange mystery that only Courtney Love could ever resolve. If you don’t decide in advance what kind of burial you want and make arrangements for their costs before you die, it will leave your loved ones stranded and forced to make last minute expensive decisions during their grief. This is very much like trying to buy an airline ticket the day you fly. You will be forced to pay full price with no room for negotiation. Think of all the things that have to be purchased for a traditional funeral.

Unusual ways to Scatter your ashes

Some of these may give you ideas for what you would like to do. Others will think these people have lost their mind long before their body was cremated. You might have read about the guy who has money in an account to pay for a stripper to lie there while they pour his ashes on her breasts. It makes you wonder what happens after wards. Will he end up in the dustbin? A woman decided to keep her husband in the kitchen with her by making an egg timer from his ashes. This could be a very good weight loss aid if anyone knew what she used to prepare the food for him or her. I know I would lose my appetite.

 A deceased drag racing fan had his ashes packed into a parachute for a race. When the race was over, the chute deployed and he was scattered at the end of the drag strip. An animal lover wants his ashes attached to a black bear like one of those tracking collars. Hopefully, he won’t ask one of his relatives to put it there for him.

Ashes can be mixed with a variety of things and made into art. One example is the person who had their ashes mixed with ink and made into a comic book. Now, some of these may never have happened or ever will happen. Whichever way you choose to scatter your ashes, be sure and show respect for the person being scattered. Cremation: Out of the Closet

It is time for some of you to be sure your relatives have come out of the closet. Crematorium directors have complained that their closets are getting full from cremated remains of your relatives. These are relatives of yours and mine that were never picked up after they were cremated. Some poor lost soul that will never see that great view on the Appalachian hiking trail. Stuck in a cardboard box in some basement is worse than getting stuck in a graveyard.

States have various laws that allow the crematorium to bury or spread the ashes but mostly they just hang on to them. Some people have literally walked off and left urns in houses when they have moved away. Another good reason that we here at PyreFyre think you should spread your ashes. Who wants to end up with the cleaning lady or spread around the landfill? These people deserve to Go Out in Style, not to go out with the next treasure sale, forgotten, and placed in the trash bin.

Recently a group of people got together and spread the ashes of some veterans who were simply left at the crematorium. They all thought that someone who had served in our armed forces deserved better. Well, here at Pyrefyre, we believe that other groups should do the same. How about all you Methodists, Baptist, Catholics, and other religious organizations go seek out those with like faith, pray over them, and get them to a better place than in someone’s closet.

This doesn’t have to be to just religious groups. There are a lot more organizations out there that can check on their members. Unions, Fraternal organizations, any and every kind of organization can do their part. Try and track down the relatives of the decedent left there and get resolution for that soul left in the closet.

Reef: A green burial

For scuba divers and other who just generally love the ocean, you can elect to have your ashes interred in a reef. The living memorial reef helps out the marine environment and conserves land that cemeteries would take up. Some reef burial companies are quite expensive so if you are a scuba diver, you can take the urn down yourself. A memorial reef urn mixed the ashes with concrete in the form of a habitat for underwater creatures. This creates a living reef over time once placed in the ocean. You must purchase the urn first and then have it placed in the ocean or do it yourself. Just remember that putting anything in the ocean must meet all local, state, and federal regulations.

Some companies that maintain reefs are Eternal reefs, Great Burial Reef, and Neptune Memorial.

Spirit Whisperer

It is a good idea to pick someone who really likes the water. If you are a scuba diver, plan on going down with the ashes to be placed at the reef. Otherwise, you can contract with a company that will take the remains down for you. You will have to see that the remains get there so they can be mixed with the concrete or placed in the urn that will be located at the reef. Reef companies do not perform the cremation so this needs to be handled separately. A temporary urn can be used at the wake until the permanent one is finished.

Wake

The wake can be held on a boat at sea or perhaps at the beach. As the wake comes to an end, the urn containing the ashes can depart on the boat for their final resting place. Consider going out to see the ashes placed at the site and then return for an evening beach memorial gathering. As the sun goes down on another day, toast the departed soul and wish them a safe journey to their next destination. Any type of marine theme for the wake along with some drinkable spirits like a good rum seem appropriate for the occasion.

Memorial

This is one type of interment where you get a built in memorial that will be there for years. Companies that build the reefs will give the coordinates of your final resting place along with a video of the spot. Your relatives may visit at anytime if he or she is a scuba diver.

Bucket List: Chock Full of Nuts

A discussion of placing your ashes somewhere with a view or going out in style would not be complete without mentioning The Bucket List. It is a movie where the two stars Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman get cancer then try some of the things that they have missed in life. In the end they are cremated and placed side by side in a Chock Full of Nuts coffee can up on Mount Everest. The last thing on their list was a majestic view.

The coffee can was selected because Morgan Freeman had an aversion to the word URN. So if you are think you don’t want to go in an URN, any old Coffee can would do or you could just spread your ashes as we here at PyreFyre think you should do.

As far as the bucket list goes, it is always a good idea to sit down and think about what you want to do in this life. It is never too late to write that list. The more you do, the less regrets you will have in your last days. One of the things you will find about your bucket list is that it will change as you age. So be prepared to adjust it as you go through life. Don’t do away with the old one but use it to see how your goals in life change over time.

It is important that you spend some deep thought on your bucket list. Don’t make it a list of a current whim or something that could take the joy out of the rest of your life. It should never hurt anyone or anything. It can be long or short but if you stick to the things you really want to do then the list will be manageable. Really think it through and make it consistent with your personality and Going out with Style.

Transporting Cremation Ashes

One of the most frequent questions asked about scattering ashes is can I legally transport them to that beautiful mountain place. Sure you can. Some issues may arise depending on the type of transportation you choose. Travel by car if you can but if you need to fly, you must consult with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) if you have any questions about the transport of the cremated remains on an airplane. Their current number is 1-866-289-9673 and their email is TSA-ContactCenter@dhs.gov.

It is also recommended that you call the airline before you purchase a ticket because each one will have their different rules. The ashes must be carried in a container that can be x-rayed in order for them to be carried on board. A cardboard box or one of these style boxes will work. Security agents are not allowed to open the urn of cremated remains.

Do not check your ashes! Some have come up missing. You certainly don’t want them staying in baggage claim with all that lost luggage.

If you intend to place anything in the box along with the ashes, wait until after the flight. In Miami, someone found a box of ashes filled with cremated remains and a watch to be buried with them. It triggered a bomb squad alert. So be careful what you place in the box. It is best to just transport the ashes alone and add the extra items at your destination.

If you plan on international travel, it gets more complicated because you have to get the specific country regulations. Do your homework. Don’t leave it to your relatives to do after you are gone. They should have very good instructions on what they need to do.

If all this seems like too much. There are companies that will ship the remains for you.

Just don’t let any of this make you decide to skip the spreading of you ashes in a truly wonderful place. Go out in style.

Scattering at Sea

This has always been a popular way to scatter ones ashes and many companies exist to help you do just that. When Ghandi died, he wanted a traditional Hindu burial but he was scattered around the country in urns so your relatives don’t always follow your wishes. However, this may be an extreme case because there were political implications with his burial. One set of his ashes were recently scattered at sea by his family. If this is the way you select, you can readily find a company to scatter your ashes in any body of water on earth. All you have to do is Google “ashes at sea”. Off the Hawaiian Islands, in the south pacific, near Antarctica, or in the Caribbean are all good places to be scattered at sea.

Spirit whisperer

Sunrise or sunset makes an excellent time to scatter the ashes. Stop the boat and let it drift with the wind. Mind the wind and pick the leeward side so the ashes will blow out over the water. If you would like, mix water with the ashes so you can pour them into the water from the urn. A very nice way to spread the ashes is to place a wreathe of flowers in the water and then pour the ashes. The wreathe of flowers will give a nice focal point for the members of your family. Individual flowers can be dropped overboard while the boat drifts away from the ashes. You can also find a green floatable urn that is made from paper-mache. It will float for a few minutes and then sink. Someone should take a video or a series of pictures so don’t forget the camera. The spirit whisperer should send the departed soul on their way with a reading of something about the sea.

Wake

The wake can be as varied as the reason for the love of the sea. For the fisherman, a scheduled fishing charter and one last fishing trip. For the sailing enthusiast, a nice breeze and a sunset with all aboard. And for those who wish to stay on the beach, an evening clambake followed by guests relating their personal experiences with the sea. Bring along your favorite beverage for a toast to the celebration of a life lived well. Have your guests take some time and listen to the symphony of sounds from the sea so they will forever associate those sounds with your memory.

“Cast thy nets and hooks to claim the seas’ bountiful harvest as the ashes of my life shall drift forever upon the open sea. I pray God shall cast his net and catch my soul adding it to the bountiful harvest of Heaven.”

Memorial

Since you will not be able to place a memorial in the Sea, a map with the location of your ashes can be put in a frame. Of course, your ashes will not remain where they are scattered and your relatives cannot come back to visit you. All they have to do is get to the sea wherever it touches the coast for you will be spread where the sea is present. If you select one of the new electronic picture frames, take many digital pictures and make a slide show of the area. Online memorials with poems of the sea, a few pictures of fishing trips, or just posting great ocean vistas would be a fitting memorial to the one that has passed on to a better place.

Today, you can have your loved ones remains turned into diamonds, placed in jewelry, or added to different kinds of art. It only takes about 8 oz (200 grams) of ash from the cremation to make a keepsake diamond. A very good way to remember a lost loved one and you can carry part of that person as well as their memory around with you. These cremation diamonds aren’t cheap but you can’t take all that cash you saved with you anyway. Diamonds are just one form of jewelry that you can use along with those cremains. There are a multitude of different companies that sell jewelry for keeping a part of the ashes with you. You can still have the rest of your ashes spread at your favorite place in nature. A small part would be set aside for a locket, cylinder, cross, or pendant.

Another company will combine your ashes with glass and make glass art out of it. Michelle Kaptur makes what she calls a SoulBurst. Which is glass art with ashes included in the glass. If you like paintings better, an artist will take your ashes, mix them with paint, and then he or she will paint a lovely painting as a memorial to your loved one.

The road less traveled for a green burial

Spreading your ashes after cremation occurs in a lot of different countries. So if you decide to have your ashes spread outside the US, it is important to be aware of local customs and laws. In Sweden, people are spreading their ashes in the mountains. This is distasteful to the local Reindeer herders who have to walk over that area. To them it is like walking over a grave in a cemetery. So they are seeking a change to the laws. Even if the law says you can spread your ashes somewhere, it is still your responsibility not to tread on the sensitivities of the people who have to live there.

Be courteous to others and select your final resting spot well. Some places you find along the way are inappropriate for spreading ashes. One example is shown in the picture. If you are a Spirit Whisperer, the “path less traveled” is the one to select. Try and get away from any marked area and use the GPS to mark the spot for relatives. It will take a little extra effort but is within the confines of showing respect for not only the deceased but for the living also.

Catholics and Cremation

The Catholic Star Herald published a story on cremation and one Catholic Diocese. It is up to the local Bishop to decide on cremation and the church service. So the local Bishop in the Diocese of Camden has approved the earthly remains being allowed in the church. The Catholic Church has permitted cremation since the 1600s but only allowed cremains in the church since 1997. The fact is that cremation just hurries along the natural decay of the body. It doesn’t affect the resurrection of the body and Spirit at a later date. Since bodies that are centuries old have already decayed and some people are unfortunate enough to be “cremated” in deaths caused by fire.

The bishop believes that as long as the body is laid to rest “with solemnity and dignity”, two things we believe are important here at Pyrefyre, cremation is acceptable and the cremated remains can be at the church service. The Catholic church still believes that a cremated body should be interned like a non cremated one but Pyrefyre believes that the spreading of the ashes should be your choice. The Bible says that we shall return to the earth with ashes to ashes and dust to dust, so we here at Pyrefyre believe God allows spreading of your ashes.

Spreading my Ashes

How many people reading this blog have ever thought about attending their own funeral? A lot of us have a fascination with seeing who might show up. As we all know, this isn’t a possibility unless you are missing and declared dead just like in the movies. Much like people in the movies getting amnesia, it just isn’t happening in the real world. What we are left with is leaving a will to instruct our survivors how we want people to commemorate our departure.

Dust-to-Dust

In recent surveys, almost 1 in 3 people were selecting cremation as their preferred choice. It is the cheaper choice over a funeral and can even be free if you donate your body to science. At pyrefyre, we think you should honor how the deceased lived their life with a memorial gathering and a spreading of ashes in their favorite spot. People have picked space, the sea, national parks, and even their favorite sports stadium to have their ashes spread. I am sure that some of you readers will have a lot more fun and exotic places that you would like for your final resting place.

Ashes-to-Ashes

A distinct advantage with cremation is the ability to schedule the gathering without regards to moving a body. An urn is much easier to transport. The gathering to commemorate your departure can be something simple like an open bar and food if you want to guarantee a big crowd or something much more elaborate. Inviting everyone to the Bonnaroo festival to honor your recently departed spirit with a weekend of live music would guarantee a big honor for you. Here are a few of the things you need to consider when selecting the PyreFyre way of commemorating your passing into the afterlife. Have someone perform the cremation, plan the memorial gathering, and pick a place to scatter those ashes. The bottom line is to take away the somber mood and let everyone remember the good times they shared with you. So be creative and set up a memorable gathering to toast your life or the life of your loved one. Remember, the memorial service and celebration of the life is often before the cremation if a person donates their body to science. In this case, our recommendation is that an alternate focal point be at the gathering of your friends and family. This will often be pictures or crafts and art made by you or your loved one. Select anything that will remind your family and friends of your life
Preplanning:

The purpose of preplanning is to get your wishes documented so your next of kin will not have to worry so much about the details. Please don’t come back and haunt your kin if the arrangements are not followed to the letter. You can choose to write them on paper, use a word processor, or buy a kit. There are also books available at your local bookstore for planning.
Select your advocate:

This may be your spouse, children, or a trusted friend. It could be the executor of your will. It is important that you take your written request and go over it with them so they understand all your wishes and are willing to carry them out.
Pick the crematorium:

You may or may not want to pick your crematorium. Donate your body to science and you can let them take care of this part. If you pick a crematorium, you will make it a lot easier on your surviving family. Just remember to go check it out, ask some people who are satisfied with their service, and always pick a reputable one. You should always select the one that gives the best value for your money not the cheapest.
Plan your wake

Pick the place to have your celebration or wake. The celebration is of your life and all its memories so your family and friends can console your closest love ones. Food and drink should be provided along with a nice meeting place. You can pick an indoor place, a resort, or something outside in nature. A good idea is to pick a spot that people associate with your life.
Your final resting place.

Think back through all the great places you have traveled and those that made you the happiest. Let your family know while you are still alive why you selected to have your ashes scattered at this place. The sky and space is the limit with where to scatter your ashes. Please check out the laws and stay away from private property without permission. Generally you can go to any forest or national park and spread them as a private citizen. It is best to keep it all low key so you don’t offend anyone.

Cremation

Contact your local cremation organization or funeral home. A lot of funeral homes will use someone else to cremate the body since most of them do not have a crematorium. The ashes will not be returned in an urn unless you buy one from them. You can also buy an urn from anyone and place the ashes in the urn once the ashes are returned to you. Some people select an urn they already own that has a special memory. The law does not require an urn but it does make it easy to transport and looks better than a box if you display the ashes.
